TREATMENT: Complex Decongestant Therapy (Conservative Treatment)

It is the most internationally accepted eco-treatment of several elements:

    ● Manual Lymphatic Drainage (DLM)

    ● Multilayer bandage

    ● Pressure therapy (optional)

    ● Compression garments

    ● Dermal care

    ● Decongestant exercises

    ● Training in basic self-care

PHASES OF COMPLEX DECONGESTIVE THERAPY:

    ● First intensive treatment phase: O goal is to decrease edema.

    ● Second maintenance treatment phase: The aim is to keep the results obtained in the intensive phase.

1ª PHASE: “INTENSIVE PHASE” includes:

Always:

    ● Dermal care

    ● Decongestant exercises

    ● Training in basic self-care

In addition:

For edema less than 20% (mild edema):

            ● Manual Lymphatic Drainage (DLM)

            ● Pressure therapy (optional)

For edema over 20% (moderate and severe edema):

          ● Manual Lymphatic Drainage (DLM)

          ● Multilayer compressive bandage

          ● Intermittent sequential pressure therapy (optional)

What does it consist of?

Daily sessions of manual drainage, intermittent sequential pressure therapy (optional) and for the preparation of the multilayer bandage. The bandage is worn for 24 consecutive hours (if possible) and removed at the physiotherapy consultation before the next session.

How long does it last?

In upper limb of 2 - 3 weeks and in lower limb of 3 - 4 weeks. Depending on the severity of the lymphedema, you may need several more weeks to get an optimal result. Occasionally it will be necessary to repeat it, if the Lymphedema increased again considerably.

2ª PHASE: “MAINTENANCE PHASE” includes:

    ● Dermal care

    ● Decongestant exercises

    ● Training in basic self-care

    ● Manual Lymphatic Drainage (DLM)

    ● Intermittent sequential pressure therapy (optional)

    ● Containment garments

What does it consist of?

DLM sessions are between 3, 2 or 1 per week (per month), depending on the case. Checks will be carried out systematically on the affected member (s).

As a complement, it is important to use "sleeves or compression stockings". Medical examinations every 6 months with change of stockings as marked by international protocols and the state and regional orthopedic catalog

How long does it last?

It is indefinite in time. Lymphedema is a chronic disease and responds differently to each person.
